The Wacom Intuos was on my wish list since I first heard about it from a prospective university. It wasn’t until I found this site that I thought that I could afford one, and after looking a little harder for scholarships provided by my school I am now a proud owner that scoffs at all else.
The price is a great, and at the time, I was able to buy it in a software package. The bad works flawlessly with Corel Painter 11 and Autodesk sketchpad which picks up tilt sensitivity unlike some of the more popular software. The free Sketchpad software is great for making storyboards and the eraser on the back of the pen is second nature after a short amount of time.
I have not familiarized with all the shortcuts, but recommend watching the tutorial on programming them. It comes with a wireless mouse that is charged by the pad, just like the pen. If you’ve been having trouble doing projects with your laptop, this is your toy. The medium size tablet can easily cover the keys of a 17 inch laptop for serious concentration, or easily sit below the keys so that you can use your keyboard shortcuts.
The pen has a natural weight and the buttons on it stay out of the way most of the time. Unlike other reviews I have not worn down nibs, and the buttons are helpful for removing parts filled in by the quick select tool that you don't want.
The tablet works great with Adobe Photoshop CS5 and I’ve only experienced lag when using browser based software, and too many people are using your wireless speed. So if you are using the free software from your school, tell your friends to stop watching videos so you can do your homework
The school verification was quick, and painless if your school is on the registry. Shipping was quick, but not the 24 hours I paid for… more like 3 days because I bought it on a Friday. The Academicsuperstore can only tell you when Wacom has shipped your order. I have had no buyer’s remorse.
The only problem I've had is losing the pen, which comes with a stylish holder, but will not help you if you took it with you to the kitchen. I recommend finding a bright hair tie or something to wrap around the end with. This product was recommended by one of the top universities for digital media, and my life has changed because of it.
Technology cannot replace talent, but it sure can shorten the gap. Stop thinking about it and buy it. If you think you cannot afford it, you haven’t looked hard enough into school scholarships that you might qualify for.
