NETGEAR's FVS318 provides the capability for inexpensive and secure remote connections over the Internet. With support for up to 8 IPSec-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels and true Denial of Service and intrusion detection firewall capabilities, the FVS318 is an ideal choice for small businesses that are securely deploying remote users or branch offices. It is an excellent alternative to more expensive and hard-to-deploy VPN devices, and with 8 10/100 switched ports, the FVS318 provides one of the lowest price-per-port VPN firewalls in the industry. The ProSafe VPN Firewall also uses NAT routing technology that provides for up to 253 LAN users to share one IP address assigned by the ISP. The FVS318 supports many of the popular VPN clients currently available.

As more and more small businesses are discovering the benefits of high-speed connections to the Internet, they are also looking for ways to use the Internet as a way to communicate within their company. Instead of using leased-lines to connect remotely, the Internet is seen as the new medium to cost-effectively transmit company data. Using a public domain to send private data has severe security concerns and can create liabilities, especially when unethical persons use methods to read or ”sniff” the valuable data being transmitted. An effective way to prevent private data from being read is to scramble or "encrypt” the data prior to being sent, and then unscrambling or "decrypting” the data at the intended destination. Establishing this encrypting and decrypting methodology over the public Internet is known as setting up a Virtual Private Network, or VPN. The NETGEAR FVS318 Cable/DSL ProSafe VPN Firewall offers the ability to establish up to eight of these VPN "tunnels”, allowing for a small company to offer telecommuting or remote access capabilities at a cost-conscious price.

In addition to VPN capabilities, the 8-port FVS318 also offers robust protection against Denial of Service attacks and hacker attempts, which have been on the rise in recent years. The Stateful Packet Inspection capabilities of the device reduces the vulnerability of network ”downtime”, since the data received by the router is scrutinized more thoroughly than conventional NAT-only routers. By virtue of this, unsavory hackers and attackers can be effectively "weeded-out”. Logging and reporting of network activity, control of access to network services, such as IM or IQC, as well as e-mail alerts are standard features on the FVS318.

The FVS318 also gives the administrator the ability to regulate accidental or intentional exposure to objectionable material and time-wasting web sites through the use of on-board content filtering capabilities.
